One of the key components in exterior wall assemblies is sheathing membranes. They are very significant for the successful performance of wall assemblies. Sheathing membranes are multifunctional. Although they do not contribute to the aesthetics of a building and provide little thermal value, they do perform many hidden functions such as control air and vapour movement, protect sheathing and other interior components of wall assemblies from water ingress, and also serve as the much relied upon drainage plain for "drained" or "rainscreen" assemblies. When sheathing membranes serve as "secondary weather barriers" they must perform regardless of the
exterior cladding chosen. As the second line of defense from the elements such as wind driven rain, sheathing membranes must be detailed and specified accordingly to ensure that they perform as intended.

With such important functions, it is crucial that sheathing membranes are specified and installed correctly to provide the required hidden protection intended before they are covered by the exterior cladding.
